because we all need somewhere to belong

Intermittent Posting – Japan 2026 (pt 6)

The weather was kind when we woke up.

It was going to be exciting, we were going to try and reach the Amaharashi Coast; something we’d only seen on YouTube.

Skipping ahead: we actually met a Japanese YouTuber we follow, they were making a video on Toyama when we bumped into them on the train. We managed a cheeky photo with them, I will remember this fondly.

Their video just went live a few days ago as I write this:

The trip to Amaharashi involved taking two trains we were unfamiliar with, and with schedules infrequent enough that if we missed one, it would entail a nearly 2 hour wait.

We didn’t have to worry. When in doubt, trust the Japanese train schedules (except when it snows, sometimes).

I am very proud of this photo.

There’s not much the camera can deliver, or that I can say about this place, really. There are literal glaciers in the background, on the Tateyama mountain range, and then there is the sea. The sight of the 2-carriage red color Himi line, its diesel engine chugging along right bloody next to the sea, is something else.

Obviously, there were people with bigger and better cameras, but it didn’t matter. Everyone just wanted to leave this place with a piece of memory they can show someone, even if the grandeur will never translate from screen to understanding.

everyone tries very hard here.

We spent about 2 hours here, ending the visit at the Amaharashi Road Stop where they served delicious curry rice and deep-fried local sardines. We realised later the top floor was full of cameras with incredibly long zoom lenses, and their owners.

even from just outside the public toilet, the view is spectacular

I keep saying this, but I mean it. I hope to return.
